Synopsis
A teenager boy living with his widowed mother, while searching for an old document, stumbles upon a bunch of love letters and a diary belonging to his father. With minor interruptions from his girl friend over the cell phone, he discovers his father had a lover and the diary unfolds graphic details of their love story. So the flash back starts and we get transported to his father’s (Cheran) love story, set in the early 70s. A young marine engineer from Chennai, posted in Kolkatta, belonging to a progressive middle class Hindu family, with interests in literature, communism and women’s freedom, visits his ailing father (Vijayakumar) in a hospital and ends up meeting a young, shy, educated, beautiful eyed girl in veils, (Padmapriya) from an orthodox Muslim family. She hails from Nagore and is attending to her mother in the same hospital. Soon, this acquaintance graduates into sharing literature and then blossoms into a full fledged love affair through our good old Indian Postal Service. The story catapults into the impossibility of their marriage, with religion standing in between. Sensing the boy’s agony, the father goes to Nagore along with his son to propose an alliance with the girl’s father. Though the girl’s father seems to agree, he later back tracks and the entire family simply vanishes. The hero searches in vain for his lover. The diary pages ends and there are some letters written by his father to his lover but not posted yet. At this point the boy’s mother comes back home and seeing her son reading her father’s diary, eagerly strings together the lose ends of the story like our good old court scenes where everything gets resolved. She explains to the boy that his father was good husband to her and a good father to him, but he was deeply sad till the end, longing for that lover. So now the boy with his good smarten mother’s permission dutifully traces out his father’s lover and hands over the un-posted love letters. The 2 souls meet up once again and the story ends.
