Synopsis :In Kaname, a small village in the far west of Japan, the villagers are celebrating an honor they received from the Prime Minister: their home town has the highest birth rate in Japan, an important achievement at a time when fewer married couples are having children and women are waiting to marry until they're much older. A young girl begins a letter on her laptop to a Tokyo journalist to explain the secret of their fertility, and we flash back 14 years to the mid-90s and the immediate post-bubble economy, when cell phones were big and schoolgirls sold their underwear in vending machines. Enter newspaper reporter Kazuya Mizuno (Tomorow Taguchi, the original TETSUO: THE IRON MAN), who has been exiled to the rural hamlet because of a sex scandal. There’s not much to do in Kaname other than gossip and take baths, and Mizuno meets the town’s gallery of eccentrics: the greedy, idiot mayor; the pedophile, moronic high school principal; the super-conservative Shinto priest; a genius school girl; a crazy old bag lady. But none is so significant to Mizuno as Teruko, the thirtysomething widowed bar owner whose bedroom eyes and calm, soothing voice casts a spell that sends him spiraling down into a world of magical realism and sex. Soon Mizuno is bearing witness to ghostly psychotherapy sessions, ancient Jomon-era aphrodisiacs, terrorists-turned-sexual revolutionaries, lynchings, betrayals, and a virtual sexual revolution. And how does this all connect with that high birth rate?
